Trick or Treat: Halloween Pedophiles? New Jersey has just sent out a letter warning sex offenders that they cannot open their doors to trick-or-treaters or hang out at Halloween activities where children are present. Some say this is unfair to sex offenders, especially low level sex offenders who only committed something like consorting with a girl just a year or to young. Others say it is a good measure to protect children. I myself don't object to the concept in theory. In reality, it is stupid. Why should sex offenders only stay away from children one night of the year? Why should we let parents think their kids are safer because a sex offender got a flier in the mail that told him to spend Halloween night at the movies? Authorities ought to be vigilant about sex offenders 365 days a year and parents should also be vigilant about their children's safety 365 days a year. Even before the days we worried so much about our children's safety, I never could understand having one's children knocking on doors of stranger's houses. Isn't this dangerous, rude and greedy? Shouldn't your children only visit the houses of people they know and who will be happy to see them? Do they need so much candy that they must knock on fifty different doors? And if your children are young, why are they running around after dark by themselves? Pedophiles ought to be locked up or monitored twenty-four hours a day if they are not behind bars. Parents ought to protect their children by being with them or having them in the company of other safe and responsible people. They shouldn't rely on a piece of paper to stand between their children and the predators no one is really watching.
